the Lower East Side
the Lower East Side [the Lower East Side] BrE NAmE
a district of New York City in south-east ↑Manhattan. It includes ↑Little Italy around Mulberry Street, ↑Chinatown, with Canal Street at its centre, and the Jewish area around Hester Street. Many people from ↑Puerto Rico have come to live there more recently. Much of the Lower East Side was built again in the 1930s under Mayor Fiorello La Guardia.
